An astronomer at the University of Chicago said. back in 1932, “There is no hope for the fanciful idea of reaching the moon.” Back then, it was laughable to think we could go to the moon. It was also laughable to Abraham that he would father a son at the age of 100 and his wife at the age of 90. Yes, he was a man of faith. He left Ur and traveled 1,000 miles to Canaan, based on nothing but God’s promise. But having no children, he married his wife’s maid, Hagar. Hagar bore him Ishmael and he assumed God would keep His promise of nation-building through Ishmael. But we find in Genesis 17:16 that God said of Sarah, “I will bless her and give you a son from her.” Abraham laughed at the idea. He said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!” But God said, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.” God’s choice of Isaac over Ishmael shows how God worked out His plans for our eternal salvation. God loved Ishmael, blessed him, and multiplied his seed, but He fulfilled His salvation plan through Isaac. In times of doubt, we, like Abraham, may laugh at God’s promise to us, because they seem impossible. Yet God has said, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”
