Weather experts say when storms come we should look for danger signs of a tornado—a dark, greenish sky, large hail, low-lying rotating clouds, and that infamous loud roar like a freight train. Ancient Israel often used weather events to illustrate God’s nature and attributes. We find this in Psalm 97: “The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice! Let the farthest coastlands be glad. Dark clouds surround him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire spreads ahead of him and burns up his foes. His lightning flashes out across the world. The earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness; every nation sees his glory. For you, O LORD, are supreme over all the earth.” The psalmist declares God’s absolute power over everything that exists—the animate, inanimate, and the weather. We would be presumptuous say that every storm, hurricane, or tornado is a judgment from God. At the same time, we would be naïve to say God never uses weather to fulfill His purposes. God could very well use atypical climate conditions to get our attention and draw us to Himself. He is Lord over heaven and earth. People who have faith in Him celebrate His right to do as He pleases.
