Millionaire William Land told a group of 59 inner-city sixth-graders, “Stay in school and I’ll help pay college tuition for each one of you.” Because William Land gave these poor students hope, 90% of them graduated from high school. But what does it mean to hope against hope? That is expecting something good to happen even when you cannot see how it will happen. The Bible says Abraham had hope like that. Paul wrote in Romans Chapter 4, “Abraham is the father of all who believe…God told him, ‘I have made you the father of many nations.’ This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing. Even when he had no reason to hope, he kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations.” He did not waver in believing God’s promise.” “He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” God gave him and Sarah a Son. Today millions of people claim Abraham as their father. Just as God’s promise to Abraham gave him hope, God’s promises today can give us hope. God promises to give eternal life to all who accept His Son as Savior. He promises to live inside of them and enable them to live productive lives now. And when this life is over they will enjoy eternal life forever. All who accept God’s offer enjoy this eternal hope.
