In 1995, the World Health Organization voted to destroy the last stock of small pox vaccines. Edward Jenner discovered the vaccine in 1796. Until then, smallpox had killed millions of people all over the world. Jenner’s discovery of the vaccine was remarkable, but when Jesus Christ was hanging on the cross, a far greater event took place. The 60-foot high veil in the Jewish Temple split from top to bottom. It was too high for humans to do it. God split it to symbolized a momentous truth: He had now eliminated the barrier that separates people from God. In his Gospel Chapter 23, Luke describes the scene this way: “About noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o‘clock. The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” Luke says the Roman officer was so moved by the events that He concluded, “Surely, this man was innocent—the Son of God.” God has now opened the door so all who desire reconciliation with Him can have it. All we need to do is to admit our sinful condition and turn to the Christ who died on that cross. He died and rose again. He lives today to forgive us, to help us live productively, and to assure us of everlasting life.
