Back in 1994, the Gallup organization did a study called “The Hostility Index.” It asked people what they thought of things like loud music, checkout lines, and traffic jams. Then medical experts compared the top cities in this index to the top cities that had high numbers of deaths. They found that the more hostile people are the shorter their life span. The inability to control hostile attitudes has an adverse effect on a person’s wellbeing. But God’s Spirit, living inside of those who accept Jesus Christ can choose to modify their behavior and live productive lives. Paul wrote in Romans 8, “You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” That is why God invites us to accept His Son Jesus as our Savior. His Spirit lives within us. As we yield to Him, He helps us control outbursts of anger that might keep us from a well-balanced life.
