A retired music teacher was too infirm to leave his apartment; but whenever someone asked him, “What’s the good news?’ he would pick up his tuning fork; tap it on the side of his wheelchair, and say, “That is Middle C! It was middle C yesterday; it will be middle C tomorrow; it will be middle C forever. A tenor may sing flat, a piano may be out of tune, but middle C will always be middle C.” That man had found one thing he could depend on. The Ethiopian Eunuch discovered another reliable truth. We read in Acts 8 that he had been to Jerusalem to worship. On his return trip, God told Philip to intercept him on Gaza road. Philip obeyed God and found him reading from the book of Isaiah ch. 53: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” Philip asked the eunuch, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” So using that text, Philip gave him the Good News — that the Suffering Servant was Jesus the Christ who had just died and rose again, and all who accept Him as God’s remedy for sin God would declare “Not guilty.” This truth never changes. It is far more reliable than middle C on a tuning fork.
