A wrestling coach told his students never to hang their heads or admit defeat. He said, “The minute you do, it’s over.” Later on, one of his students was in court for vandalizing his school. He proudly held his head high as a judge gave him a 5-year sentence. But after a few months in a lonely jail cell, he realized he had made a mistake. He began to weep, confessed his need for God, and turned his life around; 15 years later, he received the National Teacher of the Year Award. In summarizing his life lesson, he said, “When I bowed my head to repent, I tasted victory.” The Bible says that when we confess our sin to God, He forgives us because He is faithful and just. Here is how the Apostle John expressed this truth (1 John Ch1): “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” “Faithful and just” are character traits of God. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, paid our sin debt on the cross. When we confess our sin to God and admit our need, God responds by forgiving all our sins. He cancels the debt that our sin incurred. He restores us to sweet fellowship with himself. He wipes our record clean. When we bow our heads in confession to God, we taste the sweet victory of forgiveness.
