Speaking to Christians at a Church Convention, Michelle Obama said, “Our faith journey isn’t just about showing up on Sunday for a good sermon and good music. It’s about what we do Monday through Saturday as well, especially in those quiet moments, when the spotlight is not on us, and we are making those daily choices about how we live our lives. We see that in the life of Jesus Christ. He was out there fighting injustice and speaking truth to power every single day.” Like Mrs. Obama, Samuel sought to inspire his people to follow God’s precepts. God used him to assist Israel to go from a loosely governed people into a stable nation. As a boy, he had to tell Eli God had rejected him as the nation’s high priest. After Eli, he became the nation’s next leader. Later, people demanded a king. God told him to anoint Saul. He humbly gave leadership of the nation to Saul. But after doing so, he said to the people (1 Sam 12), “As for me, I will certainly not sin by ending my prayers for you. I will continue to teach you what is good and right.” Later, Saul proved to be an unfit king. Samuel had to tell him that God had rejected him as king. God then directed Samuel to anoint David to become king. Samuel was not perfect, but he had integrity, courage, and compassion–qualities God uses today among men and women.
