Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson says our entire life history is stored on our brains. Stored memory enables us to carry out various functions to live and survive. If our memory fails us and we forget critical past events, we can lose our identity. Perhaps that’s why the Bible encourages us to celebrate certain past events. God told ancient Israel to recall and celebrate Passover — never to forget the time He set them free from slavery. So we read in 2 Chronicles 30 that King Hezekiah once invited his people to come together for that purpose. He sent this message all over the land, “O people of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that he will return to the few of us who have survived the conquest of the Assyrian kings. Come to his temple, which he has set apart as holy forever. Worship the LORD your God so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.” He sent messengers all over the land with that invitation; but sadly, most people just laughed at the messengers and made fun of them. When people forget or neglect the source of their blessings, they slide down a slippery slope; first, they feel self-sufficient, then arrogant, then they create their own idols. God wants us to gather often to remember what He has done for us.
