Fish can remain in deep water–despite water pressure–because they have a swim bladder. The swim bladder expands and contracts to let the fish rise or sink in water. God created them this way. Fish illustrate how God helps us cope with outside pressure. David captured the essence of this principle when he penned Psalm 31. He knew where to turn when outside pressures overwhelmed him. We read this in Psalm 31, O LORD, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. Pull me from the trap my enemies have set for me, I find protection in you alone. I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, LORD, for you are a faithful God.” Notice how David abandons himself to the Lord by saying “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” David did this because he knew God was faithful and trustworthy. Jesus did the same thing when He was on the cross. He abandoned himself to His Father saying “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” So when the pressures of life hem us in, we can do as David and Jesus did. We can commit ourselves to our caring Father.
