Willis Tower in Chicago—once known as Sears Tower– is one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. It has 112 floors, enough steel to make 50,000 cars, enough concrete to build an 8-lane highway five miles long, and enough phone wire to reach around the world twice–a great engineering feat; but even that tower has no comparison to our amazing universe—a project of God’s wisdom and power. We often take God’s wisdom and power for granted until we need Him. Indeed, ancient Israel’s need for hope is what moved God to reveal Himself to them. They were brooding in exile, convinced that God had abandoned them. God gave them an encouraging word, found in Isaiah CH. 41, “To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? asks the Holy One. Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.” To encourage these people, God reminded them of His wisdom, power, and faithfulness. He wanted them to know that even though their condition seemed hopeless, better days were ahead, not because they are were so skillful, but because God would keep His promise to sustain them. God says to His children today “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” We can count on it.
