Three of the most crucial questions we can ask about life are these: Where did we come from? Why are we here? And where will we go when we leave the earth? That last question is critical because it has eternal consequences. Since God created us with souls that will not die, and since God alone decides each person’s destiny, a fourth question becomes necessary: How can I be sure I am in the right relationship with God? Fortunately, God has not left us in the dark about the answer. In John 3: 16, the Apostle John gave the answer this way: “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. Paul, in Romans 3, tells us that when we place our faith in Jesus Christ, God declares us “Not Guilty!” And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For we have all sinned and fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserving love declares us righteous when we accept His Son as our Savior. So being right with God is not a reward we earn for good service, but it is a gift from God. When we accept God’s gift by faith, God’s Spirit helps us to live righteously and to work for righteousness in our world. Eternal life with God is the greatest gift any person can possess.
