Warren Buffett, who owns billions, is not leaving it all to his children. He says he will leave them enough so they can fulfill their life’s ambition, “but not so much that they could do nothing.” He wants to help his children, not harm them with too much money. Sadly, many people care little to what happens to their children after they are gone. Yet the Bible is clear that we should aim to pass on our values to our children — so they can make a difference in their world. We find this truth in the book of Joshua 22. After the eastern tribes had helped Israel conquer the western land, they built an altar near the Jordan River. Initially, the other tribes thought they were doing it to worship idols — rebelling against God. When they confronted these tribes, they gave a different reason. “We decided to build the altar, not for worship, but as a memorial–to remind our descendants and your descendants that we, too, have the right to worship the LORD at his sanctuary. Then your descendants will not be able to say to ours, “You have no claim to the LORD.” They were concerned about future generations–that they would not forget God who had done so much for them. We too must do all we can to ensure that those who follow us will remain faithful to God.
