3000 California bikers protested a law that forced them to wear helmets; they said the law interfered with their freedom of choice. Freedom of choice often collides with protecting the well being of others. Few people deny that one of the greatest values we have is the freedom to choose. Slavery is horrific because it denies people that freedom. Yet with freedom goes responsibility and consequences. God created us with a free will and God respects our free will, but he constantly reminds us that we will be accountable for the choices we make. We read this in Ezekiel Ch 18: “Then another message came to me from the LORD: Why do you quote this proverb…: parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste? As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not quote this proverb anymore in Israel. For all the people are mine to judge—both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins is the one who will die.” “I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn back and live!” God created us with free wills to make our own decisions; but we are liable for the decisions we make. That is why God invites us to come and cling to Him. He helps us make wise choices that lead to worthy outcomes.
